Tips on Computer Technology By: Bill Michling
Welcome back, we are glad you came back.
Last week we talked about going wireless for networking an the Internet using Apple’s Airport technology,
This week I am going to talk about my first experience with the new iMacs. I got to get my hands on the top three models. I will also briefly talk about the new version of iMovie that is installed on all the new DV iMacs.
I would also like to remind everyone that all the year 2000 articles on the website ( http://www.mespn.com/forms/tech_articles ) are now searchable by keyword(s) or article date. This has been requested a number of times from many of my loyal readers, and now it is available, check it out.
Remember, this article and all past articles are available online at: (http://www.mespn.com/forms/tech_articles ) as well as the online version of the Saipan Tribune, which you can access by clicking the banner on that same page.
Imac, iMacs everywhere. The new iMacs have hit the stores. So , what can you expect of the new iMacs.
** Entry Level DV iMac
The entry level iMac is available in two colors, indigo and ruby. The indigo is a bright blue and the ruby is a deep rich red! Like all the iMacs the case is translucent.
The iMacs are virtually silent as they have no noisy fan like towers and PCs do. This means you do not have to put the iMac very far away from you.
The entry level DV iMac includes a 10GB hard drive, 64MB of memory, a CDROM slot loading drive, a 400Mhz processor, as well as the standard iMac goodies.
This model is perfect for the first time user and that student that is looking for a computer to help with their homework. Even though this model is the so called entry level DV, it has a lot of speed. I ran QuickTime movies and there were smooth with no chop.
Music played with nary a skip. Internet access and set up is a breeze as it is with all of the iMacs.
So if you are on a budget, this could be the iMac for you.
** The iMac DV+
The iMac DV+ is available in indigo, ruby, and sage, a deep rich looking green.
This model has 20GB of storage, 64MB ram, a DVDrom slot loading drive, a 450Mhz processor, as well as the standard iMac goodies.
It is amazing what 50Mhz increase in processor speed can do! This model is for the more demanding user that wants more speed, more storage and more color choices, as well as having a DVD drive to be able to watch all those DVD movies in all their splendid glory on your very high resolution iMac display.
So if you are on a budget but must have an iMac with a DVD drive, then this is the iMac for you.
** The iMac DV Special Edition
The iMac DV Special Edition is available in two colors, a new rich looking graphite and a brand new color called snow, you got to see them to believe how wonderful they look!
The iMac Special Edition is for the iMac connoisseur. This model comes with a 30GB hard drive, 128MB ram, a 500Mhz processor, a DVDrom drive, and all the Imac standard goodies.
This model is for the most demanding iMac user. The processor in this model runs like a 1Ghz Pentium might run. No loss of speed on this iMac!
So if you are looking for the top of the line iMac with the most speed available, this is the one.
** Standard iMac Goodies
All of the iMacs come standard with the new Apple Pro Keyboard as well as the new Apple optical mouse. You need to get your hands on this new optical mouse! It is very smooth and feels very comfortable under your hand. I think Apple is the only computer company that is supplying an optical mouse as standard with all of the new Macintosh computers! For those of you that would like to have the new optical mouse on your existing USB Mac, it is available as a separate purchase as is the new Apple Pro Keyboard.
Of course the iMacs come loaded for bare with must have software. Appleworks 6, Quicken accounting, Quicktime 4, Netscape 4.7x, Internet Explorer 5, BugDom, many utilities, and of course iMovie 2.
iMovie 2 makes it easier than ever to make and edit your own movies. Now you can be the movie director! You can use iMovie to capture the video clips, edit them and then save it to CDROM, send it via email, post it on the web, even make streaming movies for the Internet.
Even I was able to put together a movie in a few minutes that was interesting to watch, and believe you me I am no professional.
Want more information on iMovie, see some samples, and updates, then go to: http://apple.com/imovie/ and check it out.
Check out the new iMac at: ( http://www.mespn.com/mov/ruby.html ) if you have a 56k modem connection or at: (http://www.mespn.com/mov/ruby1.html) for those with higher speed connection to the Internet.

Have a wonderful week.
See you here and on the web next week.
