September is Cultural Month
These isles were once the sole preserve of traditional way of life for Chamorros and Carolinians. Today, it boasts a multi-ethnic community. Throughout the years, however, we have seen and have adapted to inevitable changes so wrought by modernity.
However unsettling they may be , the indigenous people are poised at adaptation. Thus, the gradual cross-assimilation and nurturing of harmony amongst ethnic groups in these isles all these years. We join hands and demonstrate the best of our individual traditions every Liberation Day festivity. It begins with a long parade involving Chamorros, Carolinians, Japanese, Koreans, Chinese, Filipinos, and others from near and far.
Our children of various ethnic backgrounds converge in academic and other school exercises to learn lifetime skills or the basics for further education. In classrooms and school playgrounds, shared harmony abounds that never ever gives prominence to ethnic differences, but rather commonalties. Their language and attitude is pleasantly awesome in that they openly promote true sense of harmony.
The multi-ethnic community that these isles have become over the years makes it a mini-melting pot. It offers opportunities for well-meaning partners in the benefits of growth and development. And we are grateful for the sacrifices that our friends from near and far have brought to these isles so we share in the fruits of our combined labor. In the process, we learn to engage in entrepreneurship however difficult it may be.
Paradigms (approaches) have changed bringing in their own set of challenges, especially for the less poised indigenous people. We understand the frustrations that come with the territory of breaking out on our own in such endeavors as starting a family business. But someday we shall overcome the usual fully honed wasteful attitude of everything that is government.
Despite these challenges and constancy of change, we should continue building collective confidence and resolve to make these isles a better place to live. Let the rainbow of cultures bring out the best in each of us.
Let’s strengthen harmony and understanding among our children to make these isles the paradise that it should be. It should be a win-win situation for all and all. Si Yuus Maase`!
