Public safety and health personnel were mobilized yesterday to deal with possible damage caused by typhoon Saomai which was expected to hit the CNMI last night.

Public safety and health personnel were mobilized yesterday to deal with possible damage caused by typhoon Saomai which was expected to hit the CNMI last night.

The Emergency Management Office met with the Department of Public Health to prepare the medical staff and supplies that may be needed.

“We have instructed the staff to prepare for any eventuality since it’s been a long time since we had the last typhoon on the island,” said Public Health Secretary Joseph Kevin Villagomez.

The Department of Public Safety has mobilized all its personnel in two shifts to provide assistance the whole night in case there are people who may need to be evacuated.

According to DPS Information Officer Rose Ada, the police officers will also be on standby for emergency cases.

The Commonwealth Utilities Corporation began preparations as well following the typhoon alert raised by the governor. Saipan was hit with four minor outages by late afternoon due to strong winds.

CUC dispatched its crews to trim trees and cut branches away from high voltage wires along the major electrical grids, according to its information officer, Pamela Mathis.
