The CNMI Bar Board of Directors wish to congratulate the five successful applicants for admission to the Northern Marianas Bar who will be sworn in on Friday, Sept. 29, 2000 at 11:00 a.m. at the Guma Hustisia, Supreme Court: Alexander Gorman; Alan L. Lane; Kevin Lynch; Anne G. Riley; and Earle Partington.

In addition to the above five applicants, two applicants have passed the MBE and essay portions, but have yet to take the ethics examination, which will be administered later this year.

To be admitted to the NMI Bar, an applicant is required to take a series of examinations. The applicant takes the six-hour Multistate Bar Examination (MBE), which consists of 200 multiple choice questions covering five areas of law: contracts, constitutional law, criminal law, evidence, real property, and torts.

In addition, the applicant takes a day-long essay examination and the Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination (MPRE).

Applicants who have been admitted in other jurisdictions and have been practicing for at least five years take a half-day essay examination.

The MBE and MPRE portions of the exam are graded by the National Conference of Bar Examinations in Madison, Wisconsin, while the essays are graded in Oregon, except those questions focusing on local laws, which are graded by a supreme court justice(s).

The NMI Bar passage rate for July 2000 is 70% while the passage rates in recent years were:

February 2000 87%

July 1999 44%

February 1999 33%

July 1998 71%
