Students helping students at NMC
Students helping students, that’s what the Northern Marianas College Division of Student Services Educational Enrichment Program is all about. Eight college students and four full-time employees provide counseling and tutoring services to NMC students registered in developmental English and math classes and in the Educational Talent Search, and Adult Basic Education Programs.
“Our priority is to serve those students who pay the English lab and technology fees and those in federally funded programs,” Director Jeannette Villagomez said, “because those fees and programs pay our tutors. In addition to providing tutorial services, we also have extensive English as a Second Language (ESL) software and other study materials to assist self-paced learners.”
One of the biggest programs at the center is the Educational Talent Search, a federally-funded program designed to encourage low income and potential first generation college students to attend school up to and through postsecondary education.
Open to students ages 11 to 27, the program provides workshops on study skills, test taking, time management, financial aid and career opportunities on Rota, Tinian and Saipan. Now in the third year of a four-year grant providing $236,000 annually, the program serves more than 600 students on the three islands. The program currently supports all three full-time counselors on Saipan: Nick Benjamin, Lorraine Sonoda, and Joan Torres, and one each on Tinian and Rota, Jennifer Hocog and Aloyse Manglona, respectively.
The Educational Enrichment Center is located in the south end of Building J on the NMC campus, adjacent to the NMC Student Center. It includes quiet study rooms, an audio-visual room and a large computer room in addition to office space.
The Center is open from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Fridays, and from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. on Saturdays to assist students.
