Mendiola off to Japan for cultural exchange
The chairperson of the Eighth Tinian Municipal Council, Juanita M. Mendiola, will be traveling to Japan in order to bring Japanese students to Tinian as part of a long standing cultural exchange program with the Japan Tomonokai Association.
“The Tomonokai Association has been instrumental in providing all expenses paid trips to Japan for our Tinian students in past years, and the exposure to the different culture and language has proven to be a very beneficial educational experience for our young students,” said Ms. Mendiola in a press release.
In addition to planning the trip of five students from Japan to Tinian while in Japan, Ms. Mendiola is set to meet with government and civic leaders, as well as visit Tinian sister school and business and trade schools.
Ms. Mendiola also plans to meet with other organizations that will help coordinate a world-wide peace conference to be held for the youth sometime next year in September on Tinian, called “World Peace.”
“The intent of this conference is to educate our youth on the lessons of the past,” said Ms. Mendiola. “Tinian needs to play a role in the history of war, and more importantly, the prevention of war through peace. Our island was instrumental in the great catastrophe that was the Second World War, and if we are successful in our efforts, we will never have a Third World War.”
