CNMI celebrates Veterans Week
The Commonwealth will celebrate this month a week-long commemoration honoring war veterans who braved the battlefields to defend the freedom and democracy of people all over the world.
Governor Pedro P. Tenorio yesterday proclaimed Nov. 6 to 12 as Veterans Week in recognition of CNMI’s war heroes who served under the nation’s Armed Forces.
The credit for the freedom and security Americans enjoy today belongs to the remarkable men and women who vehemently fought for liberty amid the series of conflicts, violence, and repression, according to the governor.
“Today, we salute their service, honor their sacrifices, honor them for supporting this nation in every hour of need,” said the governor.
Acknowledging that the costs of freedom continue long after the guns have fallen silent, the governor cited many of the nation’s veterans still bear the disabilities and scars of military service.
He recognized the many families of those who never returned from their service, as they forever live in memory of a very profound loss.
“It is our duty to remember what our veterans have done to uphold the commitments to them and their families,” he said.
Of the 40 million who have served in America’s military since the Revolutionary war, over 26 million still survive today, reports said.
War veterans live today a life of service extended beyond the battlefields and the barracks. Though living civilian lives, they continue to devote their energies to the service of their countries, and communities including the CNMI.
They are civic-minded role models who challenge and inspire the islands’ younger generation, as volunteers for neighbors in need.
“They represent what is best in the American spirit,” said the governor. (MM)
