Many educators and parents insist schools train students in vocational courses so when they graduate they will be able to get a “good” paying job. To this end the Federal government and local government annually spend millions of dollars hoping that students enroll in vocational courses. Upon graduation they will be ready to march into jobs waiting for them with arms outstretched. Hallelujah! Or is it an hallucination?

Training students for jobs does not create educated citizens. It creates job-skilled, not educated people. Right and wrong are not taught, only skills and techniques. The study of an occupation should not be the central function of education. Work is performed to enjoy leisure. Unless he is educated, a person will never discover how to enjoy leisure, which here is meant more than just taking a break from work. Education should strive for the humanization of work.
