CNMI invited to compete in national contest
The National Organization on Disability is inviting organizations in the Northern Marianas to participate in the 2001 NOD/United Parcel Service Community Awards Competition where prizes as much as $10,000 are up for grabs.
The competition entails groups to establish community programs which promote the full participation and contribution of people with disabilities.
Efforts ranging from community-wide flower planting, to building temporary modular ramps, to constructing a disability friendly home qualify as entries to the competition, according to Community Partnership Program Officer Bliss J. Kaye.
CNMI, the NOD official added, is one among a handful of states where none of the communities have submitted entry.
“Hopefully next year, Northern Marianas will have many communities managing projects and programs that will be suitable to enter,” said Ms. Kaye.
CPP NOD State Representative Thomas J. Camacho is encouraging local agencies to take part in the national endeavor.
Winning community programs will be publicized locally and nationally and posted at NOD’s website: http://www.nod.org.
A panel of judges are set to gather in Washington on Dec. 8 to select the winners. The official list of winners may be released on January 5, 2001.
The group of independent panel members will judge each competing program for its positive impact on the community, its effectiveness in mainstreaming people with disabilities, with participation of people with various disabilities, the media coverage it has received, and its capacity for replication in other communities.
All communities in the CPP network benefit from learning about successful programs and how they make a difference in the lives of people with disabilities, according to NOD president Alan A. Reich.
To enter the 2001 Community Awards Competition, applicants must complete the official entry form and provide a narrative of up to six pages describing your program and its accomplishments.
The deadline for submission of forms is Nov. 30, 2000. Interested parties are encouraged to contact the CNM DD Council for more inquiries. (MM)
