Rota readies for Christmas 2000 celebration
“Christmas festivities will be more joyous and varied than ever before,” said Rota Mayor Benjamin T. Manglona. “Christmas 2000 Celebration promises to be very special for our local people and visitors alike.”
Events begin on Dec. 7 with the traditional tree lighting ceremony at Leadership Park and presentation of wards to students who have won the theme and essay contest, he said
This year’s winning theme is “Christmas – The Joy of Life.” The essay contest theme is “What Christmas Means to Me.”
The Mayor’s Office and the Marianas Visitors Authority are primary sponsors for the Christmas 2000 celebration. Overall chair is Vicente M. Atalig, former congressman and now Rota’s resident director of Commerce.
“On Dec. 16 we will hold our candlelight parade,” said Mr. Atalig. “We’ll also present awards for best home decoration and recognize winners in other decorative categories.”
As part of the Christmas 2000 festivities, Rota’s Community and Cultural Affairs Office will visit up to 30 homebound senior citizens. Carols will be sung and gifts distributed.
“On Dec. 22, Santa Claus will join me in our traditional distribution of candy,” said Mayor Manglona. “We go throughout the island giving out candies and singing carols. The children, particularly, like this part of our festivities.”
Telephone poles will be decorated this year. Departments of the municipal government have been assigned sections of the Island so that all of Rota bears the festive air.
“We thank Chairman Vicente Atalig and the dedicated Christmas Committee members for all their hard work to make this Christmas 2000 Celebration one of the most colorful, cheerful, and meaningful in Rota history,” said Mayor Benjamin Manglona.
The Municipality invites the general public to Leadership Park on the Dec. 7th and 16th to join in the merry events of the Christmas 2000 Celebration.
“This is a time of year when we’re all drawn closer to the spirit of our Savior Jesus Christ. We look for peace and harmony and goodwill among all people,” said the mayor.
