Calvo case divides SIS board
The seven-member Saipan International School Board of Directors caught themselves in a deadlock Thursday over whether or not to retain board chair Patrick Mendiola Calvo, who is facing charges of sexual abuse a child.
While three board members clamored for Mr. Calvo’s ouster, three others fought for his retention during a five-hour school board deliberation last week.
Mr. Calvo, who has recused himself from participating in the board decision, reportedly said he will mull over pleas for him to step down from the highest SIS board of director post.
Meanwhile, the board disclosed it will meet again on Dec. 20 to tackle more on the issue.
A number of parents of SIS students have voiced concerns over Mr. Calvo’s existing ties with the school amid complaints of his “unethical” acts.
Sources who have requested anonymity claimed it is imperative that Mr. Calvo sever his ties from the school in efforts to preserve SIS’ reputation and block what could be the issue’s negative impact on SIS students.
The complaint filed by the Attorney General’s Office has alleged that Mr. Calvo sexually abused two young girls in two separate incidents in 1997 and 1998. The girls were 14 and 12 years old at the time the abuses were committed.
The accused has pled not guilty to charges during an arraignment on Nov. 27.
