THC, Hyatt battle for title
Number 1 team Mobil Micronesia and number 2 team Aqua Resort Club were eliminated from the playoffs in the 1st Mobil Oil Micronesia Co-Ed Basketball League Tuesday night at the NMC Gym, leaving Tan Holdings Corporation and Hyatt Regency Saipan in the battle for title on Saturday.
Hyatt Regency Saipan got their revenge over the number one team in the league with an 95-85 decision.
It was a balance attack for Hyatt with four players scoring double digits. Alfonso Masga who played in the Saipan Rotary Club under the banner of Get Covered Surf ,was the leading scorer for Hyatt with 18 points. Jeff Callagan also had the hot hands with 17 points, followed by Scott Beak and Keim Iena with 16 and 13 points, respectively.
Hyatt didn’t waste much time as they started their run and gun game with Masga leading the attack. Hyatt played their best game and this was the right time since the winners will advance to the championship round and losers will have to wait until next season.
Mobil Oil, on the other hand, was led by their scoring machine Danny Illahi with 37 points. Junar Guiab helped Illahi with 24 points in a losing cause.
Mobil was the number one team in the regular season with a 5-1 record. Mobil’s only loss came from the Microl Toyota Wheels where lady player Maryann Agasang pumped in 30 points, so far the most points scored by a lady player.
Second game was a tight one from start to finish. Tan Holdings pulled in one out with an 83-80 decision over Aqua Resort Club.
Ronald Delos Reyes led his team with 30 points followed by Jerry Zamora with 29 points before fouling out of the game. With their height advantage, Tan Holdings playing coach Ambet Flores instructed his squad to control the boards and hit the low post for the easy lay-ups. Collin Thompson came to the rescue for Tan Holdings as he did exactly what coach Flores had instructed.
Aqua Resort on the other had 22 points coming from lady player Yukiko Uchiyama as she was having an easy time driving into the lane since her defenders can not keep up with her. In the first half and the middle part of the second half, Aqua’s strategy was to give the ball to Uchiyama and this paid off. However, in the last 10 minutes of the ball game it was Aqua’s men controlling the ball and they forgot Uchiyama. Chris Bojocan backed up Uchiyama with 20 points, Aqua’s scoring machine George Prudente only managed to score 16 points.
Hyatt will have to play Tan Holdings for the title on Saturday, Dec. 9, 2000, at the NMC Gym. Banquet follows the Championship Game.
