Consulate seeks to solicit PCs for public high schools in RP
The Philippine Consulate is launching on Saipan a project aimed at generating personal computers that will be donated to non-science public high schools throughout the country.
The “PCs for Public High Schools Project,” which the Philippine government launched through various agencies and overseas diplomatic posts, seeks to generate at least 50,000 personal computers.
The computers which the Philippine government hopes to solicit from organizations and individuals throughout the world will be made available for use by 4,445 non-science public high schools all over the country.
The donated PCs will be used in computer laboratories that will be established in Philippine public high schools with the goals of augmenting the institutions’ information technology capability.
The project is also part of an overall program by the Philippine Department of Education, Culture and Sports that seeks to introduce the use of computer technology among students and promote the use of non-conventional teaching methods to facilitate training.
Consul Julia C. Heidemann said they welcome the donation of both old and new personal computers to this worthy cause, as she urged interested parties to contact the Philippine Consulate at 234-1851, or through fax at 234-1849.
As this developed, the Consulate reiterated the enforcement of guidelines governing donations for the benefit of parties who may wish to donate in kind to those in need in the Philippines.
This was done in anticipation of queries from the public regarding such donations which tend to coincide with the Christmas season, as well as donations for victims of calamities, according to a media statement from the Consulate.
The guidelines states that prospective donors who intend to ship goods should inform the Consulate of their intention, in order to determine if the designated donation is eligible for duty-free entry and if the designated consignee is qualified to accept the donation free from taxes.
The Consulate will be able to do this through the assistance of several government agencies in the Philippines, to which the prospective donations and consignees will be referred. (ARF)
