Local officials have stepped up efforts to control reckless driving around the islands by urging authorities to set up more road safety precaution measures inside villages.

Saipan and Northern Islands Municipal Council Chairman Gregorio V. Deleon Guerrero and Vice Chairman David A. Indalecio has requested Secretary of Public Works Juan Cepeda and Department of Public Safety Commissioner Charles Ingram to install additional speed bumps in villages across the islands.

According to the municipal council officials, speed bumps are crucial to controlling reckless driving and preventing unnecessary and unpleasant vehicular accidents and personal injury or harm to pedestrians.

They added that speed bumps in the past have proved effective in reducing and controlling vehicular speed in the villages.

But Mr. Deleon Guerrero also raised concerns on speed signs that have been purposely removed or damaged.

The municipal council is also intent on reminding the public that the speed limit in most villages is only five miles per hour. (MM)
