Local hero earns praises
Foregoing his own safety, Lawrence Torres Duenas charged into a neighbor’s residence to rescue two children who were sound asleep inside a house that almost burned to ashes in Denni, Capitol Hill last year.
The heroic deed by Mr. Duenas preserved the lives of two young individuals and earned for the local hero a community-wide recognition for his indisputably selfless act.
The Saipan and Northern Islands Municipal Council, in the form of a resolution, has extended its heartfelt appreciation to Mr. Duenas for preventing the death of Mr. and Mrs. Billy Billy’s two children who were sleeping in the middle of the night when their residence caught fire.
By extinguishing the fire, the local hero also managed to mitigate the complete destruction of his neighbor’s house.
In brave efforts to prevent what could have been a devastating fire disaster, Mr. Duenas instantly responded to the emergency by calling 911 for assistance and proceeded next door to offer his help.
At the fire scene, he entered the burning structure and woke the children from sleep to transport them to a safer place at his own residence.
Knowing the danger of electricity, Mr. Duenas switched off the power, turned on the water and started extinguishing the fire.
“Unnecessary and unpleasant accidents do happen daily and residents regardless of what nationality do respond to emergency to render personal assistance risking their own lives to save other lives. The council recognizes Mr. Duenas for his heroic act in risking his own life to save other lives, for being a good neighbor and a good Samaritan,” the municipal council resolution read. (MM)
