Earthquake strikes near Vanuatu

HONG KONG (AP) — A powerful earthquake struck near the Pacific island state of Vanuatu early Wednesday morning, the Hong Kong Observatory reported.

The 6.9-magnitude quake hit about 5 a.m. with the epicenter about 1,643 miles northeast of Sydney, Australia, officials said.

There was no immediate word of any injuries or damages. A magnitude 7 quake is capable of widespread damage.
