TARAWA, Kiribati (PINA Nius Online) — The Cabinet has approved the establishment of Kiribati’s first diplomatic mission, a high commission in Suva, Fiji.

The government newsletter said the government has established a task force to make arrangements.

A senior official from Foreign Affairs, Reeteta Nikuata, told Radio Kiribati News that the government chose Fiji for its first overseas mission because of the many regional organisations Fiji hosts.

These cover areas that the government is interested in developing, such as trade and training, she said.

The high commission will also boost diplomatic relations between Kiribati and Fiji, she said.

She said an official from the Office of the President will chair the task force.

The task force is due to hold its first meeting sometime this week.
