PNG dam threatened by wet season

PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea (PIR) — Heavy downpours in the capital, Port Moresby, may force the opening of more floodgates at nearby dams to release excess water.

The National Weather Service is forecasting heavy rains in the area, forcing residents along the Laloki River to flee to higher ground.

Extensive damage was caused in the area after some excess water was released last week.

Although no casualties were reported, government officials raised concerns that no warning was given to the local people before the water was released.
