NMC to offer course in martial arts
With the intention of diversifying its course offerings, the Northern Marianas College’s Community Programs will be offering for the first time a course in Tai Chi Chuan, also known as Tai Chi, an ancient Chinese martial art and system of health-promoting exercise.
Its practice consists of assuming postures while executing natural flowing movement. Tai Chi is practiced in slow motion. The body remains relaxed while the mind is tranquil and alert. This enhances the flow of “Chi” or internal energy.
The flow of “Chi” is essential to maintaining and promoting good health. By practicing Tai Chi you will develop agility, balance, flexibility, self-awareness, and a sense of well-being.
This introductory course to Tai Chi Chuan will be taught by Mr. Barry Wicksman, a full-time English instructor in the NMC Languages Department.
In addition to being a stress-release and health-promoting class, course participants will also be able to understand and practice the basic principles of Tai Chi.
The class is scheduled to run from February 10 to March 17, every Saturday morning from 7:30am to 9:00am inside the NMC Gym/Saipan Recreational Facility in Fina Sisu Hills.
The course fee is only $25 per participant . Registration is being held at the Community Programs Office located in Bldg. V of the NMC campus from 9:00am to 4:00pm. For additional information, please contact Edith DeLeon Guerrero or Tricia Benavente at 234-5498 ext. 1814/1815.
