SUVA, Fiji Islands (PINA Nius) — The heroin seized last year in Suva — weighing 783 pounds and worth over half a billion U.S. dollars — was destroyed by burning under Fiji police supervision and military guard yesterday.

High-ranking officials were on the scene to witness the first bags of heroin go up in flames. The officials included Police Commissioner Isikia Savua, Australian and American diplomats, Chief Magistrate Salesi Temo, prosecutors, and the lawyer for the three Asians charged with importing the heroin.

The heroin was first soaked in diesel before it was burned.

Commissioner Savua assured journalists that local police are involved with police in other countries in an effort to crack down on the drug smuggling ring.
