Rummage sale set to raise funds for worthy projects
The United Methodist Women of Saipan will hold its quarterly rummage sale at the Kilili Beach area tomorrow. UMW president and nursing instructor Cyndy Tice said proceeds of the rummage sale will be used to assist new mothers who are set to give birth at the Commonwealth Health Center.
She said the organization has been extending assistance by giving out starter kits through the Social Work division although qualified recipients have to be determined first by the Center’s professional staff.
For the last five years the organization has been initiating these projects with support from the staff of labor and delivery section of the CHC.
“They determined that some of the new mothers are ill-equipped to provide care for their newborn child and that’s how the program got started,” Ms. Tice pointed out.
The UMW have traditionally been an active social arm of the United Methodist Church, nationally and worldwide. On Saipan, the organization has supported various causes and was instrumental in establishing the New Directions Program of the Methodist Church that assists victims of domestic violence.
UMW also sponsors occasional seminars to increase awareness on women’s concerns and issues. In order to consistently carry out its worthy projects, the group is inviting the community to visit the rummage sale on Saturday from 8:00am to 3:00pm.
The rummage sale will be conducted to raise funds for the group’s layette starter kits for new mothers. The rummage sale will also provide a “recycling” process for people’s unused clothing, appliances, furniture, books, and other items.
Other persons leaving the island have also been encouraged to bring their stuff at the Kilili Beach area and are welcome to set up their own tables to dispose of their wares.
