The Public School System has started leaning towards the implementation of character education as an integral part of mainstream subject areas taught in public schools.

The State Board of Education is determined to place character building subjects in equal rank with academic subjects like Mathematics, Science, Social Science, and others.

BOE Chair Anthony Pellegrino underscored that the focus on values education is not necessarily an emphasis on religious morals, rather of universal core values such as respect, responsibility, and loyalty, among others as a relevant component to molding disciplined and productive citizens.

Last year, PSS initiated steps to pursue the program through activities that dwelt on reengineering values education inside campuses.

The subject was highlighted during an education summit sponsored by the school system last October 2000.

BOE officials have firmly spoken on the need to “restructure and strengthen” public schools through character education which schools can adapt at no extra cost to the government or other entities.

“Character education in the school system doesn’t cost a single cent. All it takes is a change in the attitude. We don’t need fancy equipment…just a change in outlook,” said Mr. Pellegrino.

School officials believe character education as a significant part of student achievement, adding that it is as important as academic learning.

“Reaching high academic standards without instilled moral values, integrity, and respect is not education to me. A person must possess both aspects before he/she can be called educated,” said former BOE Parental Involvement Committee Chair Roman Benavente. (MM)
