Local production of South Pacific opens Wednesday
After a 13-year absence from Saipan, the second local production of Richard Rodgers’ and Oscar Hammerstein’s world-famous musical production based on the book, Tales of the South Pacific, by James Mitchner and adapted for the stage by Oscar Hammerstein II and Joshua Logan, will open at the outdoor stage of Marianas High School at 7pm on April 4.
An all-star cast, including well-known Saipan personalities as well as some rising young stars, include Dr. Bill Flood as the Frenchman, Racheal Udstuen as Nellie, Bryan Redd as Lt. Cable, Leonella Morales as Liat, Minda Romano as Bloody Mary and Barry Wickman as Billis.
Two truly talented young people, Raynora Ignacia A. Quitugua as Ngana and Aaron James Q. Tomokane as Jerome will take the roles as the children. An international cast of dozens more will round up the production.
Set in a remote island in the South Pacific during World War II, it is a story of cultural differences, innovation and eventually understanding and acceptance. It is also a story that many on Saipan can relate to for several reasons.
All of Saipan will enjoy this musical production Sponsored by Friends of the Arts and assisted by an outstanding group of directors, musical coaches, producers and support personnel.
As a special touch, the Talabwogh Stick Dancers will perform on April 4 and 7 during intermission.
Performances will be at 7pm from April 4-7 at Marianas High School outdoor theater. Tickets are $10 general admission and $5.00 for senior citizens, students and those under 18.
