Judiciary opens house to community
The Commonwealth Judiciary and the CNMI Bar Association will present the annual Law Week 2001, which will run from April 28 to May 4 at the Guma Hustisia.
Law Week is an event designed to open the doors of the house of justice to the CNMI community.
Featured highlights of the event include a “Courts and the Media Workshop” conducted by Gary A. Hengstler, Esq., Director of the Center for Courts and the Media of the National Judicial College of Reno, Nevada; “An Insight on the Covenant and the CNMI Constitution” presentation by the former Chief Justice, Jose S. Dela Cruz; and the opening of the Judiciary History Exhibit, featuring documents and photographs from the Spanish era to the present. The Commonwealth Museum of History and Culture has been assisting the Supreme Court in Preparing for the exhibit.
As part of Law Week, justice, judges and members of the CNMI Bar Association will make presentations at several schools on Saipan, Tinian and Rota. Additionally, the Guma Hustisia will feature an “Open House” to both senior citizens and students.
A notable highlight will be chief Justice Demapan’s annual “State of the Judiciary” address. An Attorney Admissions Ceremony will also be featured to swear in the new members of the CNMI Bar.
The event will culminate with the Attorney General’s Cup, a speech competition among Commonwealth high school students.
According to Chief Justice Demapan, “The judiciary is reaching out to the community through events like Law Week. It is also our hope that opening the doors of the Guma Hustisia to the public will bring the judiciary and the community closer together.”
