Islanders win Rocball’s World Title for Women
After six months of competition with the final games of the women’s division played after school on Pugua Court, in the best of a three out of five championship series, the Islanders defeated the Covered Girls in four games to win Rocball’s World Championship for Women.
Jennifer Somol of the Islanders, who has been a force to deal with all year, was the series MVP. Jennifer scored 11 aces, 5 xunks, 15 kees, and 6 goals for a four game total of 80 points. Marie Tonga of the Islanders, was the series runner up heavy hitter with 15 aces, 15 xunks, and 6 kees for a total of 72 points. And, between Somol and Tonga, these two lady’s scored a very impressive 152 heavy hitting points in four games.
In the first game of the series, the Covered Girls defeated the Islanders by preventing the Islanders from juicing out in the fourth set. Forced into O-kon, Rocball’s equivalent of overtime action, the Covered Girls won the first O-kon set trailing the Islanders 8 to 3 when Sharma Iginoef scored a goal. In the second O-kon, the Covered Girls scored out at 11 to 8 and won the game.
In the second game, the Islanders buried the Covered Girls in four sets, juice 60 to 20. In the third game, The Islanders proved to be just as dominating as they were in game two and juiced out in four sets with a 43 to 24 victory.
In the fourth game, the Covered Girls lost the first three sets, 10 to 0, 18 to 1, and 15 to 7, but as in game one, the Covered Girls were able to rally and win the fourth set of regular play 14 to 1 and prevent the Islanders from juicing out.
However, the advantage of O-kon was in the Islanders favor. The Islanders only had to win one O-kon to win the game and championship. The Covered Girls were faced with an uphill battle. The Covered Girls lost three sets in juice and they needed to win three O-kon sets in order to win the game and continue the series into game five.
But, it wasn’t the Covered Girls’ day. The Islanders came out in the first O-kon hot and heavy. In addition to the three court points scored by the Islanders, Marie Tonga at service was just about all the Islanders needed to clean up on the game. Marie scored 2 aces and 2 xunks and teammate Jennifer Somol added in a 2 point kee to help finish off the Covered Girls in the first O-kon, 15 to 0 for Rocball’s Women Championship Title.
In the game that invented offensive and defensive scoring, multiple point scoring, and vertical areas of scoring in a team net sport, the Islanders and Covered Girls in their four game quest to win the 2001 Women’s Rocball championship, scored a total of 82 aces, 38 xunks, 46 kees, and 19 goals.
