In anticipation of over 4,000 visitors for the week-long celebration of the San Jose Fiesta, Tinian leaders and private agencies mapped out a list of activities aimed at adding pomp to the festive atmosphere on the island.

More than 37 booths and fun rides had been set up as the festival week kicked off April 27 with cockfights and entertainment provided by Sam Joyner and Maggie Naputi.

This week, at least 10 musical bands from Guam, Saipan and Tinian will perform every night in preparation for the Battle of the Bands scheduled on May 3, at the Tinian Park 2000.

In addition to games, food booths, and carnival rides, the Tinian Dynasty Hotel and Casino will hold a week-long art exhibit featuring works of seven well-known artists in Northern Marianas.

The “Diversity In Unity” art exhibit showcasing works of Phillip J. Sablan, David Sablan, Ray Viloria, Rick Guerrero, Joe Viloria, Joe Guerrero, and Doug Rankin will be displayed at the Tinian Dynasty lobby and at the poolside.

On May 4 and 5, Tinian Dynasty will also hold seven-card poker, and slot machine tournaments for casino lovers, according to Communications Manager Eva Wong.

San Jose Fiesta 2001 committee chair Ray Dela Cruz said the coronation for the 2001 San Jose King and Queen will be held on at 7:30pm on May 4. Six candidates are vying for the 2001 San Jose King and Queen title.

Mr. Dela Cruz said candidates were also given booths to raise funds. Proceeds from ticket sales and booths will be used for various community programs including Church activities.

He added that parts of the proceeds will also be used to finance disability program, medical referral services, local scholarship and revolving funds for next year’s celebration.

In preparation for bigger number of visitors this year, the committee is also eyeing additional charter flights on May 5 to accommodate visitors.

Mr. Dela Cruz said the two regular charter flights are fully booked for this week, thus, additional flight will be necessary to bring visitors in time for the huge celebration.

Aside from the regular charter flights, six ferry trips are available for residents and visitors who wish to join the celebration via boat ride. The Tinian Express ferry boats can accommodate 333 passengers per trip.

Tinian Dynasty Sales and Marketing Manager Das Krishan said the hotel-casino facility has already signed up early visitors for the San Jose Fiesta with over 90 percent room occupancy rate.

Tinian Mayor Francisco Borja will lead hundreds of visitors to Fiesta Dinner banquet on May 5, featuring a fireworks display and a live performance from the Guam-based IDK band.

This year’s celebration is bigger than last year as fiesta activities were lined up for 10 days and off-island bands were invited to perform.
