Flower, plant festival next month
The third Saipan Flower/Ornamental Plants Festival will be held on May 11, 2002 at the 4-H Club Building (Old Legislature Building) from 9am to 2pm.
The event is being organized by the Saipan Nurserymen Association, Inc.—Calvo’s Nursery, the Saipan Plant Center, Inc., the Landscapers Micronesia, and the Tropical Gardens. It is co-sponsored by the Commonwealth Development Authority and the Marianas Visitors Authority. It is supported by the Saipan Tribune and the Saipan Garden Center, Inc.
The festival seeks to accomplish the following objectives: (1) beautification of Saipan by promoting local/ornamental flowers in the islands; (2) to add another event for tourists/residents to enjoy; and (3) to help revive declining business trend in the tourism industry.
Representatives from among nursery practitioners, the MVA, the CDA, the Northern Marianas College, the Saipan Chamber of Commerce, and the Department of Lands and Natural Resources will comprise the panel of judges.
Prizes will be awarded to winning entries each of the 11 categories: palms, orchids, bougainvillea, ixora, hibiscus, cactus, bonsai, croton, dieffenbachia, hanging plant, and rare/unique plant.
First prize winners will receive $75 in cash and a $25-gift certificate; second prize winners will receive $25 in cash and a $25-gift certificate. Entrance fee for the festival is $10.
Registration forms can be picked up and submitted to any of the following companies: Calvo’s Nursery, Saipan Plant Center, Inc., Tropical Garden and Landscapers Micronesia.
