In a battle between the top teams in the Saipan Major League, the Marpac Pirates came out with a 5-3 beating over the Miller Light Brewers last Wednesday at the Francisco M. Palacios Baseball Field.
The win moved the Pirates into a tie at the top of the league standings with the Brewers as both squads now sport identical 6-3 marks.
The Pirates were the first to get on the scoreboard when Mario Sablan, who reached base on a single, scored on a sacrifice fly by shortstop Peter Tomokane. Pitcher Kevin Kapileo would score another run in the second inning for a 2-0 lead.
The Brewers’ bats finally came to life in the top of the fourth inning as they scored 3 runs to take the lead.
Justin Reyes led off with double off Kapileo, and was followed by Frances George, who got a free ride to first on a base on balls.
Then came Jerome Delos Santos, who smacked Kapileo’s pitch for a single, enabling Reyes to score. George would later score on a single, and Santos stole home for their third and final run of the game.
Kapileo would however recover and shut down the Brewers for the rest of the ball game.
The Pirates would score 2 more runs and regain the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. With Joe Kapileo and Sablan on base, slugger Jeff Diaz stepped up to the plate, and nailed a clutch shot for a single. The hit enabled both Kapileo and Sablan to score.
The Pirates would add an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh inning. JJ Laniyo, who replaced Joe Kapileo, started off by smacking a double, and later scored on a wild pitch by Brewers pitcher Joe Guerrero.
Kevin Kapileo went the distance for the win allowing 3 runs while striking out 8 batters.
Guerrero took the loss allowing 5 runs on 8 hits, while also striking out 8 batters.
