Last Thursday was a day of relief for Saipan Mayor Juan B. Tudela as the Saipan Legislative Delegation approved a supplemental appropriation of $850,000 for the remainder of FY 2002.

House Local Bill 13-004, when approved by the governor, will appropriate $600,000 for the procurement of street signs for the Saipan Street-naming Project. The bill also appropriates $250,000 for operational expenses of the mayor’s office.

The delegation applauded Tudela for his presence and the well-prepared statements he presented before them. Voicing their support for the Tudela, the delegation fully backed the mayor’s request.

However, the members strongly urged Tudela to raise his next budget request to be more equal to the current $5.2 million now given to Tinian and Rota mayors.

“Don’t put yourself down because you are the Mayor of Saipan,” Sen. Ramon S. Guerrero told Tudela. Another member of the delegation who voiced support for the mayor was House Rep. Jesus T. Attao who urged his colleagues to pass this urgently needed funding.

Meanwhile, the Saipan delegation also showed willingness to infuse more funding to the Mayor’s Office to purchase heavy equipment and let the mayor handle all community projects.

Rep. Herman T. Palacios told the delegation that he had discussed the matter with Public Works Secretary Juan S. Reyes, who, he said, has agreed to transfer DPW’s equipment to the Mayor’s Office.

Speaking on the House floor before adjournment, Rep. William S. Torres voiced his full support for the mayor’s community projects.
