Boat missing its propellers

A boat captain reported major damages on a commercial sea vessel, which was vandalized while undergoing repair at a dry dock in Lower Base, police said.

The Island Cruise Line boat sustained damages on both ends of its main shaft, losing capacity to hold the propellers, which were also reported missing, according to Public Safety spokesperson Lt. Pete C. Muña.

The propellers are valued at $5,000. No estimated value was given for the damages on the shafts.

A crew member reportedly told Vicente S. Iriarte, the boat owner, that he left the vessel Monday night in good condition and had secured the propeller blades just below the main shafts.

But when crew members returned to continue working on boat repairs the next morning, they reportedly discovered the shafts damaged and the propellers gone.

Muña noted that the cruise liner’s first five glass windows were cracked on the right side and that a piece of pipe may have been used to force the windows open.

Police reports reveal that Iriarte visited one Carl Cabrera to talk to him about the missing propellers but the latter was reportedly defensive when confronted with the subject.

Muña said that without hearing the entire story about the missing propellers, Cabrera went on to state that: “I know you’re going to blame me but I was in San Antonio.”

Iriarte told police that Cabrera denied having any knowledge about the incident and refused to cooperate with him.

Police are investigating the theft and criminal mischief complaint. (MM)
