Relative turns in runaway juvenile
A relative turned in yesterday afternoon a juvenile escapee who bolted out of detention with a fellow detainee last Tuesday, Public Safety spokesperson Lt. Pete C. Muña said.
The other escapee, however, still remained at large as of press time.
Muña, during a press conference yesterday, sought to remind the public on the consequences of hiding detainees.
“I urge the public out there, if you see them, please give us [the police] a call. If the escapees come to your place and you let them stay there, that would mean you are harboring criminals and that’s against the law,” said the public information officer.
It was not clear who was turned in among the pair of 16- and 17-year-old escapees.
The two managed to escape from the Kagman Juvenile Detention Center Tuesday night by outmaneuvering a detention guard during art work time.
The detainees reportedly waited for detention guard Hainrick J. Ogumoro to turn his back before sneaking out.
The younger of the two escapees was booked and detained recently in connection with an armed robbery on a Garapan poker establishment, where he was allegedly an accomplice.
According to earlier reports, the two escapees were in the company of two other detainees at the detention center’s library when the two plotted the escape.
Muña said both escapees had asked the guard, Ogumoro, to escort them outside where they were supposed to spray paint their art work, as part of activities that keep them busy while in detention.
While outside, one juvenile reportedly asked the guard for a red spray and just when the latter motioned to reach for the painting tool, the two quietly left the scene.
Muña said that when Ogumoro opened the door and called on the two juveniles to be where he could see them, he heard no answer from any of the detainees.
Ogumoro told investigators that he lost sight of the juveniles and when he reached for his radio to call for assistance, it was also nowhere to be found.
DPS traffic and patrol units continued to be on lookout yesterday for the other juvenile.
