Little League District Administrator James Ada announced the other day that the 2002 District Little League Championships will be held on the island of Rota from June 21-23.

In fact, Ada will be conducting a feasibility study on the island’s ballpark soon to make sure that the field’s conditions would be ideal for the games of the annual baseball event.

Rota Little League President Cris Ogo will join the District Administrator once he starts ocular inspection of the baseball facility.

“We’re looking forward to having our neighbors from Rota host this year’s District Championships. I’m confident that they will do everything to make this year’s tournament successful,” said Ada.

It will be the second time Rota will be hosting the Little League District Championships. The island also played host to the 1999 Far East Tournament, renamed since as the Asia-Pacific Tournament after Little League regrouped the participating counties.

Saipan will be sending the champions of its major, junior and senior Little League divisions to Rota. There they will compete against the island’s best squads in the categories cited for the right to represent the district in the Asia-Pacific tournament in Manila, Philippines this coming July.

The regional championships for junior, senior and big league will be from July 14-19, while the series for the major leaguers will be from July 28 to August 4.

Saipan will be sending outright the Big league champions of its tournament to the Manila regionals, according to Ada, since Rota does not have a charter for the 16-18 year old league.
