Asahi beach volleyball kicks off with banquet tonight
The 2nd Annual Asahi Co-ed Fours Beach Volleyball League kicks off tonight with a dinner banquet at the Pacific Islands Club.
PIC sports and recreation director John Cramer said the banquet will immediately be followed by a draft where players would finally find out the teams they will be playing on in the eight-week long tournament.
He said, the organizers purposely put in place the draft so that teams will be more balanced and the volleyball games more competitive.
The banquet will be held on tents set up near the PIC volleyball court at the right side of the Seaside Grill. After the draft, teams are allowed to practice at the volleyball court and the actual volleyball games will be played starting on May 2, Thursday.
Tournament rules call for teams to have as much as seven players in their line-up but no more than four, with a minimum of one female, can be on the court at the same time, according to Cramer.
Matches will be held twice a week every Tuesday and Thursday from 6pm to 10pm. Each match will be made up of three games and will be a race to 11 points.
Players are advised to be present or at least have signed or paid the $20 entry fee before the start of the banquet.
The $20 entry fee would entitle players to a $10 waterpark pass during the season, a league T-shirt, invitation to the draft banquet and a discount on all Meitetsu products that include Asahi beer, Pocari Sweat and Calpico Water at anytime while the league is in progress.

Last year, Len’s Scrapshooters defeated the Verizon Eggheads in three straight sets, 11-1, 11-8 and 12-10. Doug Muaro was adjudged MVP of that tournament and teammate Tyce Mister ended up with the Most Inspirational Player award.
