Acting Gov. Diego T. Benavente yesterday endorsed May as Older Americans Month stressing the need to protect the rights and interests of CNMI’s senior citizens.

In a proclamation signing ceremony held at the Aging Center, Benavente noted that senior citizens play a significant role in shaping the CNMI’s future as they serve as link between the past and future generation.

“Our man amkos are important part of the community. They uphold the traditions, life and history of the CNMI. It is important that amid the increasing stresses of our time, let us be reminded that they are the influential figure of our lives,” he said.

He also urged the youth to respect the man amkos and find their strength and wisdom as inspirations.

“As a community for all ages, the people of the CNMI revere our man amko as valuable members of our families and community. Families provide ninety-nine percent of the care for man amko, and the continuation of this practice is highly encouraged,” Benavente said.

The acting governor said that families, friends, and neighbors must work together to ensure the safety and well being of the senior citizens. Aging Center officials likewise urged the community to participate in the month-long celebration.

“Small gestures will help. They can visit the center, posters, banners, recognizing the Man Amko will surely make all our senior citizens very happy,” said Aging Center Director Joseph Palacios.

Palacios said major activities were mapped out for the month of May. This include, seminars on health issues, good eating habits, benefits, legal issues, mini-sports competition, and the search for the Man Amko King and Queen 2002.

Also present during the proclamation ceremony were Saipan Mayor Juan Tudela, Rota Mayor Benjamin Manglona, Department of Cultural and Community Affairs Secretary Juan Babauta, 2002 Miss CNMI Universe Virginia Gridley, 2002 Miss CNMI International Christine Juwelle Cunanan, 2002 Miss Teen CNMI Gina Tanya T. Duenas, 2002 Miss Teen First Runner Up Merced Villagomez among others.
