Community urged to join Relay for Life events
Acting Gov. Diego T. Benavente yesterday urged the community to participate in this year’s Relay For Life on May 11, which will be held as part of efforts to raise funds to find a cure for cancer.
Benavente endorsed May 5-11 as Relay for Life Week during a proclamation-signing ceremony held at the DFS Galleria. The event was witnessed by Relay for Life officials as well as cancer survivors.
“At some point in our lives, most of us will be affected directly or indirectly by cancer. Some of us here today may develop the disease. Some of us may have family members or friends affected. Some of us already been affected,” the acting governor said.
He said the Relay for Life is significant because it gives recognition to individuals who have fought the disease and won the battle, adding that it is a show of support for those who are still battling the illness.
“In participating in the Relay for Life, we are uniting in an effort to keep from losing any more loved ones to this deadly disease. The money raised by the Relay for Life will help fund research to find a cure,” he added.
At least 18 teams have signed up for the 12-hour Relay for Life event, which is slated for May 10-11 at the Hopwood Junior High School field.
In addition to the actual relay event, there will be other enjoyable activities throughout the night and on into the morning, including musical entertainment, dance performances and the Relay favorite, the Bingo For Life. This year’s Relay committee has set a goal to raise at least $75,000.
The Relay For Life also honors cancer survivors and those lost through a special survivor’s lap at the beginning of the race and during a service featuring hundreds of candles placed around the track. (Edith G. Alejandro)
