To protect and swim, bike and run
Members of the Department of Public Safety, Commonwealth Ports Authority, and CNMI Department of Customs will swim, cycle, and run in support of their fallen brothers this Saturday, May 15, as the final event of the Police Week celebration gets underway at 7am.
This will be the first running of the Fallen Officer’s Memorial Triathlon, and thus far, over 20 relay teams have entered, according to the chairman of the sports committee for Police Week, Officer Danny Punimata.
Commissioner of the DPS Edward Camacho conceptualized the triathlon, and according to the Chairman, “The entrants are ‘really gung-ho’ for the race.”
Beginning at 7am on Saturday, members of the relay teams will jump into the water along Civic Center Beach, swim out to the second WWII-era tank, and return to the shoreline to tag their partners.
The next stage of the event will be the bicycle portion, where the riders will pedal from the beach to the Garapan fire station and back. When they tag their teammate at the beach, the final stage will begin.
Runners will make their way to the Quartermaster tank, and race back to Civic Center Beach, completing the multi-sport event.
In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed House Joint Resolution 730 which designated May 15 a Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which it falls as “Police Week.” Those interested in further information or who want to compete in the event, contact Officer Danny Punimata at 664-9084 or 664-9085.
