Pepsi King of the Lanes returns
Veteran keglers will once again try to snap the winning run of youth bowlers when the Pepsi King of the Lanes Tournament returns for its monthly run this Sunday and Monday at the Saipan Bowling Center in Oleai.
Organized by the Saipan Bowling Association, the May edition of the tenpin bowling tournament will take place this Sunday, May 16, and Monday, May 17.
SBA officer and tournament director Ross Zapanta said that Sunday’s registration would begin at 3pm, while Monday’s registration starts at 6pm. Awarding ceremonies immediately follow the end of competition on Monday.
Former youth bowler Simon Manacop was hailed January Pepsi Kings of the Lanes champion, while current CNMI youth bowling team members Ruselle and younger brother Raymond Zapanta bagged the titles in the February and March editions of the tournament. Russelle Zapanta then became the tournament’s first repeat monthly champion after winning last April.
The Pepsi King of the Lanes Tournament aims to crown 12 monthly champions through the course of the year.
Cash prizes will be up for grabs in the monthly tournament, which alternates between Saipan Bowling Center and the Capitol Bowling Center – two of the premiere bowling venues on island.
The top bowlers of the year, based on SBA’s Bowler Ranking System, would then duke it out in the yearend 2004 King of the Lanes Tournament, where a purse not lower than a $1,000 awaits the overall champion. PTC and its general manager Charles Cepeda have committed over $6,000 for the yearlong bowling tournament.
