14 teams to see action in Mayor’s Cup

The 2nd Annual Mayor’s Cup Basketball Tournament unfolds tonight with a total of 14 teams seeing action in the 18-and-under and 14-and-under divisions.

Leading the pack in the older age group is Mayor’s Cup defending champion San Antonio Sixers I, which will be playing in Pool A.

Other teams in Pool A are the Saints, 69ers, and Garapan Rollers. Sixers’ junior squad San Antonio Sixers II will see action in Pool B together with defending Rotary league champion Ol’Aces, Rebels and last year’s runner-up Tinian.

In the first game Friday, Sixers I will take on Saints beginning at 6:30pm. It will be followed by the Sixers II-Rebels tussle at 8:30pm. 69ers then duel with G-Rollers beginning at 9:30pm. The nightcap then features Tinian versus Ol’Aces.

The elimination games continue on Saturday with Saints battling 69ers at 11am, followed by Ol’Aces and Sixers II at 12pm. Sixers I then go up against G-Rollers at 1pm, followed by Tinian vs. Rebels at 2pm.

Sixers go back to the hardcourt at 3pm opposite 69ers, Tinian then face Sixers II at 4pm. The day’s penultimate game features Saints against G-Rollers at 5pm, while the 6pm O’Aces-Rebels game end the eliminations. The 18-and-under championship game is scheduled on Sunday at 11:30am.

All games in the 18-and-under division will be played at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.

The 14-and-under division, meanwhile, will hold its matches at the Garapan basketball court across the Bank of Guam building.

Six teams have signed up for this year’s competition. Koberville, G-Rollers I, and 69ers are grouped in Pool A, while Spiders, G-Rollers II, and CK Kings will play in Group B.

Action starts 7 tonight with the game between Koblerville and G-Rollers I. The 8pm match pitting Spiders and G-Rollers II will follow it.

Four games are slated on Saturday with G-Rollers I and 69ers seeing action in the 5pm game. G-Rollers II then take on CK Kings at 6pm. Koblerville and 69ers play at 7pm, while Spiders and the CK Kings wound up the elimination round at 8pm. The championship game would be played starting 10:30am on Sunday.

Last year, the Sixers led by Rowell Aranda, JR Ngeskebei, Bryan Flores, and guest player Gyles Ruluked crushed Tinian All-Stars, 86-75, to win the first-ever Mayor’s Cup at the Ada Gym.
