College scholarships now available

The four-year Robert C. Byrd college scholarships in the amount of $1,500 per year are now available, according to Education Commissioner Rita Hocog Inos.

Inos said the applications have been distributed and are now available at high schools and at the PSS Federal Programs Office.

To be eligible for this four-year college scholarship with an aggregate value of $6,000, the student must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale and be a 2004 graduating senior from a public or private secondary school located in the CNMI, Inos said.

The applicant student must be a U.S. citizen or national residing in the CNMI and must be accepted or applied for enrollment at a college or university. The applicant student must not be in default on any federal obligation and must register with Selective Service.

Inos said that PSS plans to award 10 of these four-year Robert C. Byrd college scholarships. She urges all qualified graduating seniors who plan on attending college to apply.

The deadline for submission of the applications with the required supporting documentation, which includes two letters of recommendation, evidence of citizenship, evidence of residency, high school transcript, Robert C. Byrd application and an essay, is Friday, June 25, 2004.

Applications are to be submitted directly to the PSS Federal Programs Office located on the third floor of the Retirement Fund Building.
