A car crash early Monday morning proved fatal for a man who died after his vehicle slammed into a tree on Beach Road Susupe.

The incident marked the fifth traffic fatality in the CNMI this year.

Police report indicated that the victim, a 29-year-old man whose name was withheld pending notification of next of kin, was alone and onboard a black 1997 Toyota four-door 4Runner with license plate number ACE-202, and was traveling south on the inner southbound lane of San Jose.

According to DPS public information officer Sgt. Thomas A. Blas Jr., the vehicle lost control and veered off into the shoulder of the lane just as it went around the curve north of Kilili Beach. The vehicle then struck a flame tree on its driver side, resulting in extensive damage.

The victim sustained head and chest injuries. He was extricated from the vehicle and brought to the Commonwealth Health Center, where he was pronounced dead by Dr. Saccomano around 4:50am.

Traffic investigators indicated that the roadway was wet before the incident, and that the area had poor lighting.

Blas said the investigators have indicated that speed was a factor in the crash. Alcohol was ruled out.
