That’s not losing for Yogurt
Expect to see the sun to set in the east, flying swine, and a white Christmas this year on Saipan, because the world changed Thursday night as That’s Not Yogurt notched its first victory in continuation of the fifth consecutive Coors Light Co-ed Beach Volleyball League on the sand courts behind the Pacific Islands Club.
The Yogurt (1-5), Cleveland Steamers (5-2), and Team 9 (6-1) all stepped forward, Faulker (5-2), Gansha (3-4), and Government Cheese (1-6) took two steps back, while Cyphers (5-2), Rusty Slinkys (2-4), and Givity (2-4) did the green apple quick step.
The first game of the night was a battle between the only two teams with one loss in the league. Faulker and Team 9 were 5-1 when they crossed the line into the field of play, and just like Thunderdome, two teams enter, one team leaves. Team 9 bolted out to a 11-8 first set lead, followed by an even more convincing 11-5 decision in the second set. Faulker came back in the third to whoop them 11-3, but the damage was already done, as Team 9 pushed Faulker down the hill to become King of the Mountain at 6-1.
Team 9 gets back on the court next Thursday, June 10 at 7pm versus Givity, while Faulker will try to regain its form against Rusty Slinkys on Tuesday, June 8 at 6pm.
Rising from the bowels of the league to become a solid competitor, the Cleveland Steamers moved their way into a three-way tie for second by smoking Gansha. It wasn’t easy in the beginning as Gansha dropped Cleveland Steamers off at the pool in the first set, 11-6, but the Steam Team rallied to win the next two 11-9 and 11-7. Gansha fell to 3-4, while the Steamers floated to 5-2.
The team of high moral fiber gets back into action Tuesday at 7pm against That’s Not Yogurt, and Gansha takes on Givity in the 8pm game.
In the final event of the night, the winless That’s Not Yogurt and the once victorious Government Cheese got together to see who would rule the cellar. The volleyball gods were smiling on the Yogurt, as they swept the Cheese in three straight sets, 11-6, 11-7, and 11-9, becoming the last team to share the taste of success. Government Cheese now stands alone as the league’s cellar dweller, and they have one last game to try to shake that title. The Cheese and Cyphers meet at 8pm on Thursday, June 10, in the final game of the season. That’s Not Yogurt has two games remaining to take the title of last back from the Cheese, and their first attempt will be next Tuesday, June 8 at 7pm, when they try to drop Cleveland Steamers.
Games are played Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6pm, 7pm, and 8pm through the end of the season on Thursday, June 13.
The team with the best win-loss record after eight games will be crowned the regular season champ, and a single-elimination tournament will be played Tuesday, June 15, for additional prizes.
Each team of seven players is permitted four players on the court, with the stipulation that one female be on the court at all times.
All the side-outs you can handle will be doled out again next Tuesday at the PIC. If you would like further information about the Coors Light 4-Person Beach Volleyball League 2004, contact the Pacific Islands Club by calling 235-6231.
