Golf great Bruce Devlin to offer lessons

Golf great Bruce Devlin will hold a golf clinic a day before participating in the 2nd Annual NMC Foundation Open.

Devlin will play in the golf tournament and do the clinic all for the benefit of the Commonwealth’s lone post-secondary institution.

Devlin will be conducting the golf clinic on Friday, June 25, at the Kingfisher Golf Links. Cost for a one-hour session is $90, while two-hour and three-hour sessions cost $150 and $200, respectively. Organizers have put a limit of 20 players per session.

According to Devlin, he will be teaching the five basic principles for swinging the golf club correctly. In his own words he said “I will be using a teaching aid called ‘Visiontrack’ that teaches people to swing the club on the correct plane.”

Devlin also reminded participants to bring their favorite golf club with them during the clinic and they should also have “lots of enthusiasm to learn….”

Continental Micronesia is the major sponsor of the NMC Foundation Open, which seeks to raise funds for a new college campus. The event is scheduled for June 26-27, at Kingfisher Golf Course. First tee time is set at 6:30am.

Continental will donate several round trip tickets to be used as prizes and raffle giveaways during the event. In addition, the airline will help fly Devlin to Saipan.

One of the most successful golfers in history, Devlin turned professional in 1961 and is an eight-time winner of the PGA Tour.

He won the Senior PGA Tour in 1995 and is also well known as a professional golf commentator. He has been involved in designing and building over 140 golf courses around the world.

The NMC Foundation Open features competition in six flights – Championship (0-8 handicap), A (9-13), B (14-18), C (19-up), Women’s and Seniors. First place is guaranteed $400 in cash and a roundtrip ticket, runner-up gets $350, while third place takes home $250.

Hole-in-one prizes up for grabs include a 2005 Mitsubshi Outlander, a 2005 Nissan Altima, and a 2004 Toyota Rav4.

The golf tourney concludes with a banquet on the evening of June 27 at the Hyatt Regency Saipan.

Registration fee is $200 until June 21. After that the cost goes up to $300. Checks should be made payable to the “Northern Marianas College Foundation.”

The NMC Foundation board of directors and golf committee has solicited corporate and individual sponsorships for the event, which is targeted to raise $50,000 for the college.
