After winning their match against Givity, it was time to uncork the bubbly and celebrate, as Team 9 earned the title of regular season champion of the fifth annual Coors Light Co-ed Beach Volleyball League on the sand courts behind the Pacific Islands Club.

Since losing in their opening match against the Slinkys on Thursday, May 6, Team 9 has gone on to win its remaining seven games en route to winning their title. All that lies ahead for them now is the single elimination playoff tournament on Tuesday, June 15.

Team 9 took to the court for their final match-up against the Givity knowing that they needed the win. Faulker and Cleveland Steamers were able to defeat their opponents on Tuesday to advance their records to 6-2. If the 9 lost, Faulker would be the regular season champion because they would’ve held the advantage in the tiebreaker.

The first set went to the Nine, 11-7, but Givity quickly reassembled and took the second set by the same score. With the season on the line, Nine-time pulled out the clutch victory by outscoring the G-men (and ladies) 11-8 in the third.

The first game of the night was between two of the league’s bottom feeders, as That’s Not Yogurt took on Rusty Slinkys in a showdown of the low down. Aside from bragging rights, there was actually some significance to the match-up. The non-dairy squad needed the victory to force a one-game playoff with the Slinkys to determine who would clinch the eighth and final spot for the playoff tournament.

In the first set, Team Yogurt whomped on the Slinkys to the tune of an 11-2 score. The dusty Rusty came back to even the set count to one apiece with and 11-8 rally in the second. That’s Not Yogurt flipped the score around in the third set to win their second game of the season. The Yogurt won their second game in three attempts, while the Slinkys dropped their sixth in a row. Both teams now have one last a shot at the playoffs on Tuesday, June 15, when they battle it out in a one set playoff. The race to 15 begins at 5:30pm.

The final game of the regular season was played at 8pm, and showcased one of the league’s best teams in Cyphers (5-2), and one of the league’s best named teams, Government Cheese (1-6). The outcome of this match-up seemed to be almost predetermined, but that’s why they play the game.

Cyphers came out to take the first set 11-6, but the efforts of the once unbeatable squad were thwarted by the hungry Cheese in the final two sets, 11-7 and 11-5. The Cheese finished up the season by upping their record to 2-6 to secure the seventh slot in the playoffs, while Cyphers slipped to 5-3, good enough for the fourth seed.

The playoffs get underway at 6pm on June 15, when Team 9 takes on the winner of the match-up between That’s Not Yogurt and Rusty Slinkys. Game 2 will feature Cyphers and Gansha, followed by a showdown of the Cleveland Steamers and Givity. The final game of the opening round will pit Government Cheese and the league’s second place finishers Faulker.
