The USS Gary, an Oliver Hazard Perry Class guided missile frigate, docked on Saipan yesterday morning, bringing on board a crew of 203 sailors and 21 officers.

According to Veterans and Military Affairs Office deputy special assistant Ruth A. Coleman, the crew will assist and take part in the commemoration of the 60th anniversary of World War II Battles of Saipan and Tinian.

The cast is led by Commander Rob Marin, Lt. Commander Lenderman, and Master Chief David G. Renwick, who, along with other officers, were briefed and informed on current events on island by a welcoming crew comprising individuals from various agencies on Saipan.

The crew was also briefed with security measures to be taken during their stay.

Department of Public Safety commissioner Ed Camacho said officers from the department will partner with the ship’s Shore Patrol personnel in insuring the safety of veterans, marines, and airmen who will be on island for the events.

“It’s going to be a good turn out and I am confident on the safety measures that are being put in place,” he said.

The USS Gary last docked on Saipan in 2002.

The crew was also greeted by local beauty queens from the Northern Marianas Beauty Pageant Association and the Liberation Royal Court, as well as several cultural dance performances on the dock. (Shan Seman)
