The Pacific Asia Travel Association’s Micronesia Chapter disclosed that international television giants CNN and ESPN want to visit the region to take some video footages of the destination.

PATA Micronesia chairman Dr. John Salas said the association has received requests from CNN and ESPN to take footages of the region and to film documentaries, respectively.

According to Salas, the requests became part of the discussions of PATA’s marketing committee in a meeting at the Saipan World Resort last week.

Salas also cited the improving trend in visitor arrivals to the region, mainly on travelers from Japan, Korea and China. PATA Micronesia aims to contribute to the growth, value and quality of travel to and within Pacific Asia through close working relationship among industry players.

PATA Micronesia also discussed PATA International’s integration plan in a general assembly of chapter members, which include top executives of the region’s visitor bureaus. The chapter said the plan is necessary to regain not only ownership of the PATA brand but also financial solvency.

The chapter is an affiliate of PATA International, which leads collective efforts to promote the Asia Pacific destinations by a membership composed of nearly 100 government tourism bodies, over 55 airlines and cruise lines and hundreds of travel companies.

PATA Micronesia has a membership of about 88, including tourism agencies and companies from the CNMI, Guam, Palau, Federated States of Micronesia, and Marshall Islands. The chapter’s David Sablan, the MVA chairman, has been appointed to a board seat at PATA International.

PATA has been involved in studying travel trends around the globe. The association underscored the potential of the China travel market, projecting that Chinese spending on travel would reach $100 billion by 2008. (John Ravelo)
