Fishermen to be in the Lib Day parade
The Saipan Fisherman’s Association met Wednesday night to monitor the progress of the 20th Annual Saipan Fishing Tournament preparations, and it looks like there will be boats traveling down Beach Road next week to promote the event.
The members of the SFA gathered to meet for the first official time since signing their charter in the office of attorney Robert Torres on Thursday, May 27. Among the many topics and ideas discussed was entering the Liberation Day parade.
Members were unanimous in their decision to enter the annual event, and volunteers pledged their time to making it happen.
Taking it one step further, the association vowed to bring back an event that was lost to the tournament years ago. This year the public will once again be treated to a parade prior to the commencement of fishing.
There was an air of excitement as the fisherman shared information about their progress in securing sponsors, trophy templates, the parades, and receiving an invitation to enter a tournament in Japan.
The Japan Game Fish Association extended a welcome to the SFA for the 26th International Billfish Tournament that is scheduled to be held Thursday, July 15 through Sunday, July 18.
There will be 90 teams entered in the annual event held in the water off of the shores of Shimoda, Shizuoka. Unfortunately, with such short notice, it will be almost impossible for the local team to be picked, and the details to be worked out.
There are only roughly nine weeks until the 20th Annual Saipan International Fishing Tournament will be Begin Saturday, August 28 in the deep waters off the coast of Saipan and conclude Sunday, August 29.
