Pika, Pika, Pika! was the theme and rightfully so. For the very first time, the Tinian Mayor’s Office, together with Marianas Visitor’s Authority, held the First Tinian Hot Pepper Festival in May, an event that proved so successful that organizers are now planning for the next year’s edition.

Organizers said that the festival is something that gives the Tinian hot pepper new meaning besides being the hottest indigenous hot pepper in the Marianas.

Vendors for the event set up shop to showcase the different ways that Tinian’s hot pepper could be put to use. Besides the food and drinks booths, island artists also took the moment to showcase their talents over at the Taga Beach Park across the Tinian Dynasty Hotel and Casino.

“Part of the event that I would have to say I enjoyed witnessing and of course, participating in was the very first hot pepper eating contest ever held on Tinian and possibly the CNMI,” said Joey Charfaurus of the Tinian Mayor’s Office.

Participants tested their bravery by eating a bowl of Soba that contained two heaping tablespoonful of crushed Tinian hot pepper, with a little bottle of water on the side.

The winner of the first hot pepper eating contest on Tinian was Charfauros with a time of 13.08 seconds.

To add to the entertainment, the event also featured a karaoke contest and a live band from Saipan, with the prizes for the karaoke contest donated by the Tinian Mayor’s Office, Verizon, and the Tinian Dynasty Hotel and Casino.

According to Tinian Mayor Francisco M. Borja, this Hot Pepper Festival is only the start of even bigger and better festivals to come.

Special thanks to the Tinian Mayor’s Office, MVA, and all those who worked hard to make this event a success. (PR)
