The Joeten-Kiyu Public Library is having two reading challenges beginning July 12 to the end of the month, July 31. All the children of the CNMI are invited to join.

The first challenge is for preschool children and those children going into Kindergarten, first, second or third grades. They will be required to read 20 Caldecott award-winning books. Parents may read the stories to children unable to read yet. Each child who completes and returns a booklet by the end of July will receive a book of their own.

The second challenge is for students going into fourth through eight grades. They will be required to read six Newberry award winning books and write a paragraph about each book. They must read the books during the challenge time period. Books read before July 12 do not count. Each student who completes and returns a booklet by the end of July will receive a $10 gift certificate for Best Sellers Book Store.

Upon completion of the required reading the booklet must be returned to the library. The Children’s Librarian will review each booklet to see that it is complete.

The gift certificates and the books for the younger children will be supplied by the Library Friends, dedicated to improving literacy in the CNMI.
