Basketball and tennis dominated the headlines this past week.

The CNMI’s top men and women players flew to Guam to compete in the fifth staging of the Micronesian Basketball Tournament.

After a win against Chuuk in their debut, the men have gone on a downward spiral losing to Marshall Islands and Kosrae its next two outings to drop off from the medal race.

The women, so far, have been more fortunate. After four games, the team has a record of 2-2 alternating losses and wins against Palau, Chuuk, Guam, and Pohnpei heading into Friday’s rematch with Palau.

In local basketball, pool play of the 2004 UFO-San Miguel Cup continued at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium last weekend, while 2004 Inter-Restaurant Basketball League resumed play at the Ada Gym Wednesday morning.

In tennis, the Century Insurance Co. Tennis Classic continued to chug along at the American Memorial Park tennis courts with vaunted netters Faheem Ebrahim, Tim Quan, Mayuko Arriola, Joy Minor, Buddy Garote, and Richard Asuncion contesting the championships.

In baseball, the Saipan All-Stars got a ticket to Guam for the Asia-Pacific Regional Tournament after topping Tinian in the championship last July 3.

Last Wednesday, the Miller Lite Brewers finally completed the championship cast after sweeping the Pirates, 8-7, in Game 2 of their playoff series at the Francisco M. Palacios baseball field. They will face the Northern Yankees for all the marbles this week.
