The CNMI women’s basketball team won the bronze medal of the 2004 Micronesian Basketball Tournament even as the islands’ Junior All-Stars bowed to Guam in the 2004 Asia-Pacific Tournament.

The girls of coach Don Blondin redeemed themselves after losing to Palau in the semifinals Friday by repeating against Pohnpei, 71-60, Saturday at the University of Guam field house.

The CNMI women thus duplicated the squad’s third-place finish in last year’s Marianas Basketball Tournament held in Palau. Of the players from that team, only six remained in this year’s squad led by 2004 MBT mythical selection Beverly Igitol.

The women’s team finished the five-team tournament with a 3-3 record counting wins against Pohnpei (twice) and Chuuk. It lost to powerhouse Guam and Palau (twice). Guam incidentally defeated Palau in the championship game, 74-63, to take home the gold medal.

The rest of the CNMI women’s squad consists of Krista Cruz, Henny Elayda, Chariss Ruluked, Vanessa Diaz, Dana Ngirchongor, Emily Oitreong, Vanessa Mobel, Ladonna Castro, and Connie Camacho.

The men, meanwhile, finished in sixth place in the tougher men’s competition. Guam took the gold after drubbing Republic of Marshall Islands, 90-69, in the championship.

Members of the CNMI men’s team are playing-coach Elias Rangamar, brothers Peter and Abong Camacho, John Santos, Tony Diaz, Jester Garcia, Mark Wallace, Gabriel White, Oscar Ada, Ambrose Ogumoro, Danny Barcinas, and Jeremy Winkfield.

The men’s and women’s team were also accompanied by FIBA Oceania Level II referee Ricky Itaas and scout Greg Iginoef.

Also Saturday, the Asia-Pacific Tournament got started with the Junior All-Stars absorbing a 7-6 loss to archrival and host Guam.

Two other games slated for that day were rained out. The Philippines against the CNMI game in the Senior League and the CNMI versus Guam match in the Big League will be played on Monday.

The CNMI Junior All-Stars is made up of Jesse Borja, Shane Yamada, Jesus Iguel, Vince Sablan, Martin Pangelinan, Josh Arriola, Joe Salas, Thorn Sablan, Ryan Ada, Jonathan Salas, Kevin Babauta, Nicolas San Nicolas, Nunu Kapileo, and Juan Tenorio. The team is managed by Frank “Sonny” Flores and head coach is Roy Sablan.
